Abstract: Optogenetics comprises a growing family of related techniques for the optical interrogation and control of excitable cells. Combining genetic targeting with light delivery systems makes it possible to drive or silence subpopulations of neurons and the related behaviours, with a high spatiotemporal precision. Since optical manipulation is fast, selective, and minimally invasive, it provides distinct advantages over traditional electrical means or pharmacological approaches for cell perturbation. Here we showed in anesthetized rat that optogenetic stimulation of nucleus accumbens (NAc) neurons increased neural activation. We labelled a population of neurons activated with channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) and later optically stimulated these neurons by using an optrode and recorded spontaneous action potentials from the one neuron.

Abstract: In this paper, we have analyzed Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) in single mode silica optical fiber. The BFS is analyzed in conventional Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) at operating wavelength of 1550 nm by a pump-probe technique. The effects of strain and temperature on BFS are fully characterized. We found that, the BFS change of 0.06 MHz/µ-strain and 1.26 MHz/oC, respectively. The BFS changes in Brillouin gain and Brillouin loss mechanism have been analyzed. In addition, we also presented Brillouin linewidth and peak gain variations of Brillouin gain spectrum with various temperature and strain values. The results demonstrate, the BFS have a strong linear relationship with strain and temperature along the sensing fiber.

Title:

Long Path Industrial OCT - High-precision Measurement and Refractive Index Estimation

Authors:

Tatsuo Shiina

Abstract: Long-path optical coherence tomography was developed for industrial use. The system is compact and easy variable to change the measurement speed and range. In this study, its precision and long-path were designed as 1μm and 100mm, respectively. Refractive index of water was analysed by changing the temperature. The results well coincided with the theoretical curve of group index of refraction.

Abstract: The manufacturing procedure and the optimization of high refractive index overlays for long period grating-based sensors are reported. The overlay consists of a sol-gel-based TiO2-SiO2 thin film. By carefully tuning the overlay thickness and refractive index, it is possible to bring the LPG in the so-called transition mode working region, and to optimize and maximize the LPG sensing performances. LPGs are here characterized as optical refractometers, and, after a suitable functionalization of the sol-gel coated fiber surface, as biosensors performing an IgG/anti-IgG bioassay.

Title:

Characteristics of Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating Inscribed by Fusion Splicing Technique and Femtosecond Laser

Abstract: Phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) inscription in nonphotosensitive single mode fiber (SMF) by the fusion splicing technique and femtosecond laser is reported. Two SMFs are fusion spliced to introduce a refractive index modulation point which acts as a phase shift, then exposing the fusion spliced fiber with femtosecond laser and a uniform phase mask. Two dips can be observed in the transmission spectrum of inscribed grating, and the max induced refractive index modulation can reach to 4.2x10-4 without any fiber sensitization for a peak power density of 4.5x1013 W/cm2. The annealing tests show that type I PS-FBG is successfully inscribed. This type of grating also shows good strain and pressure characteristics. Such PS-FBGs can be potentially used for optical fiber lasers, filters and sensors.
